Join us to create a living Korean Kitchen Garden
Discover the joy of growing rare Korean specialty vegetables in local Dutch soil. Located in the historic landscape of Natuurgebied Zuilen—with the beautiful backdrop of the Castle, Slot Zuylen—our plot is perfectly situated right where the city meets nature.
Led by Oud-Zuilen resident and chef Ohyoon Kwon, we bring fresh kkaennip (perilla), traditional mu (radish), sweet chamoe(Korean melon), and crisp ssam greens directly from the earth to the plate.
This is a space built by community. Drop by to lend a hand in the soil, learn the art of Kimchi-making, or gather around the fire for an authentic seasonal Korean BBQ.

FAQs
hat particular help do you need right now?
Since 2026 is our very first season, we are focusing heavily on foundational work. We currently need hands to help with laying down the compost beds, implementing our irrigation system, and, of course, keeping up with weeding. It is a bit of hard work upfront, but we promise it comes with the immense joy of harvesting and enjoying the food together later!
Can I just help the project without signing up for a membership?
Yes, absolutely! Any help is welcome. You don’t need to commit to a full membership to be a part of the garden. Check out our upcoming workdays and events, or just drop by if you want to see how these unique vegetables journey from the soil to the dinner plate.
I’d like to join as a member, but I don’t have much time to help. Can I still join?
Yes! We understand that not everyone has the time to get their hands dirty every week. The Harvest Tier is designed exactly for you. With this tier, you provide vital financial support to keep the project growing, and in return, you get exclusive access to our community workshops, pop-ups, and dining events.
How did you get the opportunity to use this land?
This garden is part of the Natuurgebied Zuilen development, proudly supported by the Gemeente Utrecht. The Korean Kitchen Garden is a "self-managed initiative" (zelfbeheer) in collaboration with two other local citizens, Inge and Maud. We have a two-year contract to transform this land into something truly special for the neighborhood.
Where is the garden located?
We are located on Slotlaan, right across from Slot Zuylen. The parcel itself has a lovely history—it was previously used as a pasture for feeding horses.
Are there set opening hours for the garden?
No. The garden is open 24/7. There's no fence or wall. Everyone is welcome to walk in and explore and enjoy the atmosphere
Can I join with a group?
Absolutely! Coming with a partner or a friend makes for a lovely experience. For groups larger than two, we recommend booking a private group session — this way you get the whole space to yourselves and the social dynamic stays just right. Private sessions are especially popular for family gatherings, friend get-togethers, and celebrations. Get in touch and we'll arrange something special for you.
What kind of vegetables do you grow?
For the 2026 season, we are focusing on crops all originated from Korea. You can look forward to: Perilla leaves (Kkaennip) and vibrant Mustard greens Crisp Korean Radishes and hearty Pumpkins Sweet, refreshing Korean Melons (Chamoe) and various Salad leaves We started out a bit late this year, but we are thrilled to see how much we can cultivate together!
Are you sure you can yield enough harvest for your workshops and cooking?
Farming always depends on unpredictable factors like the Dutch weather and building up brand-new soil. Since this is our very first season on this land, there might be quite a few surprises along the way! However, we have a fantastic backup plan: if we ever run short, we can draw from my private moestuin in Oud-Zuilen to ensure our workshops and dining events are always stocked with authentic produce.
